HMRC Approved Software

HMRC requires functional compatible software that keeps digital records and submits MTD updates securely. You choose from published compatible products listed on GOV.UK.

  • Software must connect to HMRC APIs for submissions
  • Free and paid options exist for different complexity levels
  • Bridging tools exist for limited spreadsheet workflows

What it is

HMRC does not approve individual products by name in all cases — they publish lists of software that supports Making Tax Digital. Software must be able to keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC via their APIs.

Check HMRC’s current software lists for MTD for Income Tax and VAT separately. Authorise each product through Government Gateway. One product may cover multiple businesses if it supports your setup.

Who it applies to

Anyone required to follow MTD for Income Tax or MTD for VAT must use software that HMRC recognises as compatible for that obligation.

What you need to do

  • Choose software from HMRC’s compatible software lists.
  • Connect your HMRC account through the software’s authorisation process.
  • Check the software covers all your income streams and VAT if applicable.

Key points

  • Free options exist for simple cases; paid software may suit multiple businesses.
  • Bridging software can submit figures from spreadsheets in limited cases.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying software that only does invoicing without MTD submission
  • Not completing HMRC authorisation so submissions silently fail
  • Using incompatible spreadsheets and typing figures manually each quarter
